Should I stick to a writing genre?

Should I stick to a writing genre?

Many traditional authors would say yes! Many new age writers would also say yes. I too used to think that as a writer I must find a niche i.e. genre in this case and then stuck to it. Reason being, my readers after reading my first book will expect me to write in the same genre.

The question is- Is it true?

And the answer is- Absolutely no!

Here’s why. Modern readers have a variety of genres in front of them. They have hundreds and thousands of authors to choose from. It’s practically a buffet laid in front of them and you can’t expect them to eat only lasagna!

Even a lasagna lover would like to have a bite of an Indian cuisine and what if he likes it more? Or, somebody who loves eating apple pies falls in love with chocolate truffle?

It’s the same with the readers today. They have e books and audiobooks. They have fiction and non fiction. These genres and styles are again further divided into sub categories. As a writer I want to make most of it. I hate being fit into a box or labeled. It goes with everything about me. As a writer rather than fitting myself in a genre, I rather make the genre(s) fit in as per my writing style.

Having said that there are many new authors as well as traditionally published authors who believe in doing the same. Chetan Bhagat, Novoneel Chakrabarti, Joanna Penn and Willow Rose are to name a few.

So next time when someone asks you what genre do you write in, you can quote these authors and present a solid case for your free flow writing style. Just like I did.
