You’ve probably heard this a lot. In order to write one needs to read a lot and rightly so.

“Reading for writers is like training for athletes.”- Linda Sue Park

There are many reasons why a writer must read a lot of books. But I’d go a step further and state, that not only books, a writer must read articles, blog posts, magazines and journals along with books. Reading helps in ways one can understand only when one starts reading.

Here are some reasons why every writer must read at least 2 books in a month-

  1. Generates new ideas- Reading helps a writer come up with new ideas for his new novel or a self help book. It also helps in generating new topics for blog posts and articles for publications.
  2. Helps experimenting different narration styles- When you read a lot of different books written by different authors, you notice different styles of narration. This helps in generating or improve upon your style of writing.
  3. Builds a rich vocabulary- Books, articles, magazines and journals all deal with words and this helps in building a richer vocabulary. In other words a person will have a rich word bank and he can use it in his writing and save his readers from the boredom of repetitiveness.
  4. Helps us improve- When we read different genres or books written by different authors in the same genre we get to know whether we are good, crappy or awesome. This insight is critical in improving our writing game and it come only when we become avid readers.
  5. Inspires us- Motivational articles and books lifts us up from our difficult times provided, we implement the given teachings. I find books written by Robin Sharma exceptionally useful during tough times.
  6. Helps us improve our expression- Whether you are a storyteller or a life coach. For every writer expression is the key factor. In order to have an impressive expression we need to use idioms, phrases and new words in order to grip our readers attention. Reading makes all us learn all the necessary elements required in order to become an excellent writer regardless of the genre we write in.
